It all depends on the plan you are on. Private plans have a lot more flexibility to them. In most cases, if you have a Marketplace plan, you can only change your health insurance plan during the open enrollment period. However, certain life events such as marriage, birth of a child, or loss of coverage may qualify you for a special enrollment period.
That will depend on the plan you are on. On the private side, it is usually not an issue to add a new member. If you have a Marketplace plan, you will need to qualify for a special enrollment period or do so during Open Enrollment.
